Letter From the Board Vice President
Dear WSSL Community,
Transitions. I’ve been thinking about this topic a lot as all of my children are in school full time this year for the first time ever. What does this mean for me? How do I support myself as the ground shifts beneath my feet and my routines change? I go to what anchors me, trust the process and allow for some discomfort in the in-between place.
One of my family's anchors is school. The relationships, sense of purpose and foundations of The Waldorf School of St. Louis (WSSL) anchor us. Rhythms and routines anchor us. After attending parent toddler classes with my oldest many years ago, I knew the principles of WSSL aligned with what is best for my children and family. I have learned right alongside them. My children come home from school with their needs met during the school day, allowing them to quietly play for a time by looking at books or drawing while they eat a snack. They don’t come home from school having to recover. WSSL allows children to be children. My children have personal relationships with all of their teachers and receive connection, care and concern during the school day. Outdoor time, the arts, foreign language and movement are incorporated into the school day as essential parts. The small class sizes, no disruptions from screens and phones, and no rigid testing or grading system allows for longer periods of in-depth learning while reducing stress and building confidence in their abilities.
Seasonal ceremonies are cherished parts of the school year, and my favorite comes in November. The Festival of Light that shines forth from us during the darkest time of the year and helps us in finding our inner light, inner resources. The outdoor spaces and festivals give reverence to the earth and its seasons. That made sense to me and nurtured me as a new mother coming to parent-toddler classes all those years ago. That spirit is still in me as I walk my youngest to join her class in the garden. There have been changes over the years and, like all things, nothing stays the same. But the spirit and principles of The Waldorf School of St.Louis and the community live in each of us. Alone things are harder; together we can move mountains.
I write this letter to you now as one of the families that is able to attend The Waldorf School of St. Louis because of the generosity of Annual Fund donors. In the 24/25 school year 24% of our families received tuition assistance in the amount of $112,000. This year, all of the money raised from the Annual Fund will go toward funding the school’s tuition assistance program. As I reflect on how my family has benefited from our experiences at the school, I think about how wonderful it would be if every family that wanted to send their child to our school was able to, regardless of their finances.
With that I ask you to please join me in making a contribution to this year’s Annual Fund. Whether this is your first donation to The Waldorf School of St. Louis or you have been a loyal yearly donor, we appreciate you being a part of our school community. All of us are working together to make this community stronger. We are grateful to you for your commitment and appreciate any support that you are able to give to our school.
With Gratitude,
Becky Gremaud,
Board President, WSSL Board of Trustees
